If you’re visiting the Durham Dales Centre in Stanhope, you’re perfectly placed to explore some of the North East’s most rewarding walks. From gentle riverside strolls to dramatic high-level routes, here are five you won’t want to miss.
1. Stanhope Riverside Walk

Distance: 1–3 miles
Difficulty: Easy
Perfect if you’re short on time or walking with family, this gentle route follows the River Wear through Stanhope. You’ll pass open green spaces, woodland stretches and, depending on the season, plenty of wildlife.
It’s ideal for a relaxed afternoon before stopping for coffee or browsing the independent shops back at the Durham Dales Centre.
2. High Force Waterfall

Distance: Around 1 mile (main path)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
One of England’s most impressive waterfalls, High Force is a must-see. The River Tees plunges dramatically over ancient rock formations, creating a spectacular natural landmark.
The main path is accessible and well maintained, making it suitable for most walkers. It’s particularly striking after rainfall when the water is at its most powerful.
3. Hamsterley Forest Trails

Distance: Various routes from 1 to 7+ miles
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Hamsterley Forest offers well-marked trails through beautiful woodland, with options for all abilities. Whether you’re after a short circular walk or a longer hike, the forest delivers peaceful surroundings and plenty of fresh air.
It’s also a great option year-round, with autumn colours and spring blossoms offering particularly scenic backdrops.
4. Wolsingham to Frosterley Railway Path

Distance: Approximately 5 miles (one way)
Difficulty: Easy
Following part of the historic Weardale Railway line, this relatively flat route connects the villages of Wolsingham and Frosterley. It’s ideal for steady-paced walking with expansive countryside views and minimal steep sections.
A lovely way to explore more of the dale at your own pace.
5. Killhope Lead Mining Museum and Moorland Walks

Distance: Various
Difficulty: Moderate
Set high in the valley, Killhope Lead Mining Museum sits within the dramatic landscape of the North Pennines. The surrounding moorland offers more challenging terrain and sweeping views across the dale.
It’s a brilliant choice if you want to combine industrial heritage with big-sky scenery.
