Taking Time to Explore: A Wellbeing Walk Through Stanhope

Oct 8
3 min read

As autumn begins to arrive in the Durham Dales, some members of the Business Durham team joined colleagues from the Durham Dales Centre for a wellbeing walk around Stanhope, taking the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air, beautiful surroundings and all the benefits that come with spending time outdoors.

Led by Durham Dales Supervisor Kathryn Lowe-Oliver, the walk explored some of the picturesque routes surrounding Stanhope, passing through peaceful woodland, alongside flowing streams and across beautiful countryside as the landscape began its seasonal transformation.

The Durham Dales are renowned for their natural beauty, and autumn is one of the best times to experience them. As leaves gradually turn from green to shades of gold and amber, the area offers a stunning backdrop for walking, reflection and reconnecting with nature.

The wellbeing walk provided an opportunity for colleagues to step away from their usual routines and appreciate the fantastic environment that surrounds the Durham Dales Centre. Research continues to highlight the benefits of time spent outdoors, from supporting physical wellbeing to improving focus and reducing stress.

Beyond its role as a business hub, the Durham Dales Centre is ideally located for those looking to enjoy the landscapes, walking routes and wildlife that make this part of County Durham so special. Whether it's a short lunchtime stroll or a longer countryside adventure, there are plenty of opportunities to get outside and explore.

For the team taking part, the walk was a welcome reminder of the unique setting the Durham Dales Centre calls home and of the importance of making time to enjoy the natural environment on our doorstep.

Fancy Trying the Route Yourself?

If you'd like to follow a similar route around Stanhope, here's the walk the team enjoyed:

  1. Leave the Durham Dales Centre and walk towards Stanhope Old Hall, crossing the B6278 near the Grey Bull pub and remaining on the footpath.

  2. Turn left before Stanhope Old Hall onto the public footpath into Stanhope Dene.

  3. At the top of the Dene, cross the wooden bridge and continue up the slope to the top of the lane.

  4. Cross the lane and continue towards the main road.

  5. Carefully cross the B6278.

  6. Follow the public footpath past Station House towards Ashes Quarry.

  7. Climb over the stile and walk along the lower edge of the quarry.

  8. Continue down the steep bank onto East Lane Road.

  9. Turn right and follow the main street back through Stanhope, passing the local shops before returning to the Durham Dales Centre.

With autumn colours continuing to emerge across the Dales, there's never been a better time to discover the walking routes, scenery and hidden corners that make Stanhope such a wonderful place to visit, work and explore.

Please note: Parts of the route include uneven terrain, stiles and steep sections, so suitable footwear is recommended.
